$10 First Charter National Bank Notes

Original Series $10 National Bank Note
The first type of $10 national banknotes ever printed was from the original series printed from 1874 and earlier. All of these banknotes will have a small red spiked seal like the one pictured above. There are other small differences that can determine the price one will sell for, but the main factor will always be the condition, bank, type, and serial number.
Depiction: At the left, Benjamin Franklin drawing electricity from the sky with a kite and a key. At right, Liberty soaring on an eagle, clutching lightning in her hand.
Value: A poor condition $10 first charter national bank note will bring about $650. Depending on the bank, a better condition note will bring about $3,500. Sometimes the value of these bills can be over $13,000 if its a good bank and great condition.
$10 National Gold Bank Notes

Ten Dollar Gold National Bank Note
This ten dollar national gold bank note is unique and special because they were only issued for banks in California. Whenever you see the word gold on a banknote, what you likely have is something special, especially if its a national banknote like the one pictured above.
These $10 bills will be printed with a goldish-yellow paper which is just another thing that makes them unique. The easiest way to distinguish one of these banknotes is to look for the text at the top of the bill that says “Redeemable in Gold Coin.”

$10 1882 Brown Back National Bank Notes

Ten Dollar 1882 Brown Back Territorial National Bank Note Value
1882 $10 brown back national bank notes are some of my favorite and one of the most popular among collectors. If you scroll up you’ll notice how similar the design on these $10 bills is. The difference is only a few small details, like seal color, the bank of issue, and charter number. If your bills have a serial number lower than number 9, what you have is something rare and valuable regardless of its condition.

Ten Dollar 1882 Blue Seal Date Back National Bank Note
1882 $10 blue seal date back national bank notes can be very valuable depending on the bank the note was issued for. Unfortunately, the market on these date back notes isn’t as strong as it once was. You can distinguish this type by looking at the back of the bill. As you can see from the picture above, the reverse of each note has the dates “1882 – 1908” on them. This date range was the intended printing dates for these bills however the printing run lasted years after 1908.

The series of 1882 value back $10 nationals look similar to the date back nationals in many aspects. Value back banknotes are more collectible than the date back variety in the series. Print run depends upon which bank the notes were issued for and will have an impact on their value. You can see the bill pictured above has its denomination “TEN DOLLARS” printed on the back. 1902 $10 Red Seal National Bank Note
Ten dollar red seal national bank notes can be some of the most collectible nationals in the hobby. The example above is Charter number 252 from Pittsburgh. The signatures at the bottom of the bill have also been lightly faded, which is oftentimes caused by improper storage or poor quality ink used at the time.
These red seal banknotes can quickly reach 5 figures in value depending on condition, serial number, and bank of issue.
