$5 First Charter National Bank Notes

Original Series $5 National Bank Note
Five dollar national banknotes were first printed in 1862. Depending on the year printed, they will either have a spiked red seal (pictured above) or a rounded red seal. The spiked seal variety was printed 1874 and earlier while the rounded scallop seal was printed 1875 and later.
There are other small differences that can determine the price one will sell for, but the main factor will always be the condition, bank, type, and serial number.

Value: A poor condition $5 first charter national bank note will bring about $300. Depending on the bank, a better condition note will bring about $1,500. Sometimes the value of these bills can be over $10,000 if its a good bank and great condition.
$5 National Gold Bank Notes

Five Dollar Gold National Bank Note
Five dollar national gold bank notes are very rare and desriable. These notes have a different color paper, gold in color, and were only issued for banks in California. This is fitting considering the California gold rush of 1848–1855.
At the top, you will read “Redeemable in Gold Coin” which also makes this national unique. This is another one of my favorite types to collect simply because you could redeem them in gold coins, which most collectors find really cool.

$5 Black Charter Number National Bank Notes

Five Dollar Black Charter Number National Bank Note
I’m a total geek when it comes to five dollar black charter national bank notes. If you have one of these, you truly have something rare. I’ve personally handled about 10 in my entire life. And I’m super fortunate to have held them! On top of that, the note pictured above is also a serial number one. Talk about a rare national bank note.
These older $5 national bank notes will either come with a red charter number, no charter number, or in very rare instances, a black charter number. If you look at the picture above, under the serial number you will see the black charter number “2130” and also to the left of the United States at the top center.

Value: Even a poor condition $5 black charter national bank note will bring about $10,000. Depending on the bank, a better condition note will bring about $35,500. Sometimes the value of these bills can be over $50,000 if its a good bank and great condition. Make sure you consult with a paper money expert to avoid getting paid less than you deserve.
$5 1882 Brown Back National Bank Notes

Series of 1882 $5 Brown Back
1882 $5 brown back national bank notes are some of my favorite and one of the most popular among collectors. These five dollar brown backs get their nickname from the reverse of the bill having a brown back, go figure.
All of these $5 bills will have a large round brown seal at the bottom right corner of the bill along with a large brown charter number. The serial numbers will always be a dark blue color. Prices for brown back nationals will depend on condition, bank, and serial number.

Value: Poor condition $5 brown back nationals are worth $300. Decent condition bills from a decent bank can bring $1,200. Great condition nationals from a rare bank can bring over $10,000.
$5 1882 Blue Seal Date Back National Bank Notes

Five Dollar 1882 Blue Seal Date Back National Bank Note
1882 $5 blue seal date back national bank notes can be extremely difficult to acquire depending on which bank the bill was printed for. As you can see from the image above, on the back of the bill you’ll notice the dates “1882 – 1908” which were the intended dates for these to be printed.
Despite being really awesome notes in my opinion, these aren’t as popular as the brown seal variety. This is due to a combination of the number of them printed and demand in the market for the brown back variety.

Value: Poor condition $5 blue seal 1882 date back nationals are worth $80. Decent condition bills from a decent bank can bring $1,000. Great condition nationals from a rare bank can bring over $9,000.
$5 1882 Blue Seal Value Back National Bank Notes

Five Dollar 1882 Blue Seal Value Back National Bank Note
Five dollar 1882 national bank note value back bills are just as common as the date back notes. The main difference here is on the back of the bills you’ll see the denomination. Depending on the collector, some of these may be more valuable depending on how many were printed for a specific bank. On top of that, condition of the bill along with serial number will impact the value. Say if you have a serial number 1 through 9, that will definitely increase the value of the note.

Value: Poor condition $5 blue seal 1882 value back nationals are worth $150. Decent condition bills from a decent bank can bring $1,500. Great condition nationals from a rare bank can bring over $12,000.
$5 1902 Red Seal National Bank Notes

1902 $5 Red Seal National Bank Note
Five dollar red seal national bank notes are some of the most attractive and collectible bills in the hobby. The pink/red signatures on this specific note are unique and could possibly increase its value as some collectors find it appealing. Red seal nationals were almost always printed less frequently than the blue seal types, making the red seal large size national banknotes much more collectible. However, while they are more collectible, the price tag on some of these banknotes may not be reasonable for some collectors.

Value: Poor condition $5 red seal 1902 nationals are worth $175. Decent condition bills from a decent bank can bring $1,000. Great condition red seal nationals from a rare bank can bring over $10,000.
$5 1902 Blue Seal National Bank Notes

1902 $5 Blue Seal National Bank Note
1902 five dollar blue seal national banknotes are what we typically get offered on a daily basis. The bill pictured above is from El Paso with the charter number 2997. This charter number isn’t particularly rare, but the bill above is in extremely fine or better condition.
We’ve paid as little as $50 for a national banknote with a blue seal and as much as $30,000 for a very rare charter number national bill. It really all depends on these factors. If you’re not sure what you have, send us a clear image and we’ll respond with our best offer within 24 hours.

$5 1929 Small Size National Bank Notes

Series of 1929 Type 1 $5 National Bank Note
What makes the $5 small size national bank note pictured above rare is the combination of its condition and being the first bill printed, serial number 1 from Pomona, California. If it wasn’t for the serial number 1, it would probably be worth a few hundred dollars at best. Since it’s serial number one you can expect to get a few thousand dollars when you sell it. Make sure you consult a paper money expert before selling any currency. We will help you free of charge.
