Fifty dollar interest-bearing treasury notes from 1864 are extremely rare, only about 20 are known in existence. These $50 interest bills are seen with up to five coupons attached to the right of the note.

History: Fifty dollar interest bearing treasury notes were only printed in the United States during 1863 and 1864. The 1864 $50 interest bearing bills have an iconic perched spread eagle at the center of each bill.
Interest bearing treasury notes came in many denomination, with the fifty dollar denomination being the third-lowest. In the late 1800s these old bills traded hands frequently, so most known examples are heavily worn. Remember, this was during a time in U.S. history when the state of the nation during the Civil war was in crisis, anyone who didn’t redeem these bills for their interest at the time was either supremely confident or extremely ignorant. This fact alone is why there are so few interest-bearing notes known to exist.

Interesting Facts: The interest bearing treasury notes were issued by congress because of the financial crisis occurring during the American Civil War. These $50 interest bearing notes only had three separate years of issuance, meaning the time they had to interest was limited. While this fact doesn’t always directly impact value, there are certain collectors who collect fifty dollar interest bearing notes by their year of issuance.

Prior Installments Payable Only On Presentation of Coupon Therefor – Washington – Pay to bearer At Maturity. Convertible at the option of the holder into Bonds Redeemable at the pleasure of the Government at any time after five years and payable twenty years from August 15th 1867 with interest at six per cent per annum payable semi-annually in coin.
