Fifty dollar interest-bearing treasury notes from 1861 are rare with only about 2 known to exist. These old treasury interest notes are so rare that the only factor when determining value is really the condition. If you are unsure about the old bill you have we are always happy to help. History: Fifty dollar interest bearing treasury notes were only printed in the United States during 1863 and 1864. The 1861 $50 interest bearing notes have a picture of Andrew Jackson on the left side of each bill and Salmon P Chase on the right. Interest bearing treasury notes came in many denomination, with the fifty dollar denomination being the third-lowest. In the late 1800s these old bills traded hands frequently, so most known examples are heavily worn. Remember, this was during a time in U.S. history when the state of the nation during the Civil war was in crisis, anyone who didn’t redeem these bills for their interest at the time was either supremely confident or extremely ignorant. This fact alone is why there are so few interest bearing notes known to exist.

Nickname: These $50 bills don’t have a true common nickname outside of 1863 $50 Interest Bearing Treasury Notes.

Interesting Facts: The interest bearing treasury notes were issued by congress because of the financial crisis occurring during the American Civil War. These $50 interest bearing notes only had three separate years of issuance, meaning the time they had to compound interest was limited. While this fact doesn’t always directly impact value, there are certain collectors who collect fifty dollar interest bearing notes by their year of issuance.

Value & Information: Value for interest bearing fifty dollar treasury notes are strictly based on condition.

There is only one type of 1861 interest bearing treasury note so varieties won’t impact value.

The bill shown above should be worth over $275,000. We have had the pleasure to handle only one of these rare fifties during our time collecting and dealing. Please do your research before selling your interest bearing treasury note, or contact us for assistance.
